A WINTER MICRO WEDDING IN WINCHESTER
The Beauty of Intimacy: Capturing a Small, Heartfelt Wedding
As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the honour of witnessing countless unions over my 12 year career. Grand affairs with glittering venues, sprawling guest lists, and perfectly choreographed dances. And I adore them. But every now and then, I get to photograph something more intimate. A small wedding where the focus is not on the wedding but on the deep, genuine connection between two people and their closest loved ones.
Recently, I was asked to photograph one such wedding, and it was an experience that left a lasting impression.
This wasn’t a wedding of grandeur. The guest list could be counted on two hands, the venue was the (ever charming) historic registry office in Winchester. One with a short aisle between a few rows of chairs. But the simplicity of it all only made the emotions more vivid.
From the moment I arrived, it was clear this wasn’t just a wedding, it was a celebration of a love story that had been carefully nurtured. There were no distractions, no elaborate timelines. Every moment felt intentional. The bride and groom shared glances that spoke volumes, and their smiles were filled with a kind of quiet joy that didn’t need an audience to validate it.
It was a reminder that while weddings are often beautiful, they’re truly about the bond between two people. This couple’s connection was undeniably powerful.
As a photographer, I thrive on the unpredictability of a wedding and that of the guests attending it. But small weddings like this are actually a gift. The scale allows me to slow down and focus on the little things, a little more that I would usually have time to do. I am always mindful of little moments such as the groom wiping away a tear as the bride recited her vows, the way her hands trembled with excitement as she held his. Each guest was someone who had played a meaningful role in the couple’s lives. Watching the bride and groom take time to connect with everyone, sharing laughs, hugs, and heartfelt words, felt like watching a masterclass in gratitude and love.
The best weddings are when you’re able to capture the way two people look at each other when they think no one is watching. It’s in the small gestures, the honest words, and the laughter that fills the gaps.
Big weddings may get the spotlight and of course, they’re magic! But small weddings have magic too. A quiet magic all their own. They’re raw, real. And I’m here for it.
